6 tips to prepare for a Cake Smash Photoshoot - Brisbane Baby Photographer

The Cake Smash Photoshoot is becoming more and more popular, particularly for 1 year old. Here are a few tips from us to you, to help prepare for your cake smash shoot.

1. Cake choices matter

White or yellow cake along with fun colourful icing works great. I love pastel colours. Besides your baby, the cake is going to be the star of the show so it needs to look great-even once it’s being smashed and smeared! Generally I wouldn't recommend a dark chocolate of red velvet cake, as the dark tones might be overpowering.

Cake toppers with their age or name can be a fun option.

2. The Outfit

Pick an outfit that you won’t be heartbroken if it stains but something that is cute and works well with the colour palette and cake you have picked out.

Bring options to the studio as it is always best to have back up plans when working with babies.

3. Parents be prepared to get messy

You will probably get covered in cake as well when picking up and playing with your baby, so bring clothes you are willing to get icing on. I would recommend bringing a spare change of clothes for you and your baby.

Make sure your baby is well rested and fed before the photoshoot. If you’re thinking, a well fed baby wont want to get stuck into a cake…from experience, it’s still hard to keep them away. A hungry baby is often a grumpy baby and we don’t want that!

5. Defrost the Cake

If you buy a cake make sure you give it time to defrost prior to coming to the studio. If it is frozen it will be harder for the baby to dig in. Also the frosting doesn't smear as easily creating an odd clumping effect.

6. Have fun!
